Statue to honour Micko

Kerry's managerial legend Mick O'Dwyer
Mick O'Dwyer will be immortalised in a bronze statue to be unveiled in his home village of Waterville on Saturday.

Sculptor Alan Hall has based his creation on a photograph taken during O'Dwyer's playing days. The Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs Jimmy Deenihan, who played on the great Kerry team which O'Dwyer managed to eight All-Ireland titles, will be hand to perform the official unveiling of the statue. The master of ceremonies will be Micheal O Muircheartaigh.

"To be honest, I know very little about it," O'Dwyer is quoted as saying in The Irish Examiner.

"A group of people came to me and said that they had decided to go ahead with this after a full meeting of the people of Waterville and I gave my blessing. Normally, they wait until someone is dead before they do something like this so it's nice to be recognised by your own people in such a way."

Widely regarded as the GAA's most successful manager, O'Dwyer already has a park in Waterville named after him.
