Down SFC: holders cut loose

Burren's Gerard McCartan.
Burren opened their defence of the Down SFC with a 7-15 to 1-9 annihilation of Kilclief on Saturday.

Eamon McGovern and Gerard McCartan both bagged hat-tricks, while Donal O'Hare also found the net for the rampant champions. Kilclief's solitary goal came from a Martin Craig penalty.

Mayobridge also showed their teeth when hammering Newry Shamrocks 5-16 to 0-9 at Paric Esler. Ryan Brady, Adrian Barry and Conleth O'Hare were among the goals for the winners, who were without their injured county star Benny Coulter.

Danny Hughes grabbed Saval's second goal in their 2-9 to 1-7 victory over Liatroim. The game was overshadowed, however, by the dismissals of two players from each team.

In the weekend's other games, Castlewellan defeated a Dan Gordon-less Loughinisland 0-13 to 0-3, Bryansford edged out Downpatrick 2-14 to 3-7, while An Riocht suffered a 0-7 to 4-20 drubbing at the hands of Kilcoo.
