Ryan retires

Dublin's Shane Ryan
Dublin's Shane Ryan has announced his retirement from intercounty action.

The 33-year-old dual star won six Leinster SFCs and was a football All Star in 2008. He returned to the Dublin hurling squad the following year but has now been forced into retirement by a long-running back injury.

The Naomh Mearnog clubman featured as a substitute against Tipperary in last year's All-Ireland SHC semi-final.

But the back problem meant he was unable to take part in proper training this season so he has decided to bow out.

According to this morning's Irish Independent, Ryan says he'll never forget the ups and downs of life in the sky blue jersey:

"I'll always remember the big wins but unfortunately it's hard to forget the big losses. But it's been a privilege to play with Dublin, I've been delighted to devote my life to it."
