'Shanks' brings glory to Model County

Former All-Ireland hero Seamus 'Shanks' Whelan was in the news again last weekend.

Whelan lined out at corner forward on the Wexford side that won the 1968 All-Ireland senior hurling championship and, 44 years later, he's still a leading light in the world of sport.

On Saturday at Shelbourne Park, his greyhound Piercestown Sand came home as 8/1 winner of the Shelbourne Gold Cup, seeing off red-hot favourite Mildean Panther.

"We have enjoyed great luck with this dog, with ten wins out of ten races, all in top-class company," 'Shanks' told the Wexford People afterwards.
