Devenney sides with McElhinney

Former Donegal footballer Brendan Devenney has sympathy with Martin McElhinney over the county v. college row.

McElhinney was at the centre of a war of words between DCU boss Niall Moyna and Donegal manager Jim McGuiness last weekend after the former alleged that the latter demanded the player line out with his county and not the college.

McGuinness refuted the claims and has since stated that he would consider withdrawing the county from the McKenna Cup due to colleges having first option on county players.

However, Devenney feels that McElhinney is the one suffering from all this and stated that the player was put in a very uncomfortable position.

"Martin McElhinney might well consider DCU to be number one. He's got his course to consider and the Sigerson Cup coming up. Donegal are obviously going to be number one later in the year," Devenney stated to Newstalk earlier in the week.

"It put Martin in an awkward position. With the game being on Sunday initially it was fine but once it was switched to the Saturday I think he should have been given the day off."
