Ex-Dublin performance coach Caroline Currid is adamant that there is a place for sports psychologists in the GAA.

As the modern game progresses, sports psychologists are common place in the backroom team of many counties, but there is an underlying belief that there is no need for such a science in the GAA.

However, Currid points to the record that she has in the GAA as the former Sligo ladies footballer has been very successful over the past few years. She was part of Dublin's management team last season and also worked with the county's All-Ireland U-21 FC winners in 2010, Tipperary's All-Ireland hurling champions in the same year and the Tyrone footballers in 2008.

"It's the results that speak for themselves," she said. "Just look back on the teams that are successful and ask are they using the psychology or are they not...? The last four years the winners have used somebody. Kilkenny are using people, Tipperary have been using people, so the results speak for themselves. That's all you can go by in this line of work. You can do as much work as you want, but if you're not getting the results, it's not worth too much," she tells the Irish Independent.
