Lynch bows out

Cork's Anthony Lynch
Anthony Lynch has followed his Cork football colleague John Miskella into retirement.

The 33-year-old Naomh Aban clubman has decided to call time on his 13-year inter-county career after being plagued by injury in the past two years. One of the top corner backs of his generation, Lynch first came to prominence in 1999 when he won the first of two All Star awards after playing a starring role in Cork's capture of the NFL title and their run to the All-Ireland final, which ended in defeat to Meath.

Lynch remained a regular fixture in the Cork full back line throughout the last decade and had some memorable tussles with Kerry's Colm Cooper, in particular. He played in Cork's 2007 and 2009 All-Ireland final defeats to the Kingdom, but since then his contribution has been restricted by injury and he underwent a groin operation last year.

He finishes his career, however, with a coveted All-Ireland medal, having been part of the Cork panel which ended a 20-year wait for Sam Maguire Cup glory last year.

Lynch was also a regular for Munster in the Railway Cup for a number of years and represented Ireland in the International Rules series in 2002 and 2005.

In all, he won five Munster medals, one All-Ireland, three National Leagues, two All Stars and one Railway Cup medal.
