Cork SFC: Casey penalty sinks Castlehaven

October 17, 2011

UCC's Daithi Casey
Daithi Casey's late penalty proved decisive as UCC completed a Cork SFC and Sigerson Cup double for 2011 when they overcame favourites Castlehaven at Pairc Ui Chaoimh yesterday.

UCC 1-12
Castlehaven 0-10

The sides were level on 0-10 apiece with five minutes remaining when Paul Geaney was taken down for a penalty, and Casey - who had helped Dr Crokes to a place in the Kerry SFC final the day before - kept his cool to beat Paudie Hurley for the game's only goal. The goal was quickly followed by two points from substitute Gavan O'Grady as UCC claimed their 10th Cork SFC title in all and their first since 1999.

While Castlehaven had battled back from a five-point deficit to restore parity before the penalty, no one could begrudge the students their success. Favoured by the wind in the opening period, they finished the half with three unanswered points to take a 0-8 to 0-4 lead into the break after the sides had level three times in the first 20 minutes.

Roscommon's Niall Daly started the sequence before centre back and captain Sean Kiely and a Casey free left four between the sides.
After the sides had traded points on the restart, Castlehaven reeled off four unanswered points from Mark Collins (two), Seanie Cahalane and sub David Burns to draw level with five minutes remaining.

But UCC held the nerve and Casey's penalty settled it.
