The late Peter McNulty Laois
Laois GAA is in mourning following the sudden death of Portlaoise and county football star Peter McNulty yesterday.
Aged just 25, McNulty was due to line out for Portlaoise in today's Laois SFC semi-final against Stradbally, but the match has been called off as a mark or respect.
A busy half forward who was an ever-present on the Portlaoise team since graduating from the minor ranks, the deceased was last seen at the club grounds, Pairc Ui Fhaolain, on Thursday evening for a team training session. He was found dead at home yesterday, with a post-mortem due to be carried out later today.
McNulty first came to national prominence as a member of the Laois team which won the All-Ireland minor football title in 2003. He subsequently represented his county at under 21 and senior level and was expected to feature in new manager Justin McNulty's plans for the coming season.
Last year, he helped Portlaoise to their 26th Laois SFC title and was also to the fore in their march to a Leinster club title (his sending off against Garrycastle in the final baffled many). He scored the insurance point for 'The Town' in their recent Laois SFC quarter-final win over Crettyard. One of his finest displays in a Portlaoise jersey came in the 2008 county final when he scored 1-3 in their 2-14 to 1-7 defeat of Timahoe.
May he rest in peace.
