Antrim SHC: Loughgiel end 21-year wait
September 27, 2010
All-Star nominee Liam Watson hit 0-6 as Loughgiel Shamrocks captured their first Antrim SHC title since 1989 following a one-point victory over Ruairi Og Cushendall at Casement Park.
Loughgiel Shamrocks 1-9
Cushendall 0-11
Cushendall opened the scoring through Declan McKillop, but an Eddie McCloskey goal after three minutes put Loughgiel in the driving seat. Benny McCarry and Watson tagged on points to leave the Shamrocks five clear after 11 minutes.
Cushendall closed the gap to 0-5 to 1-4 at half-time through two Paddy McGill frees and a Sean Delargy point and, holding their opponents scoreless between the 15th and 42nd minutes, they surged into a 0-9 to 1-4 lead.
But after Watson and Barney McAuley had brought Loughgiel back onto level terms, Watson and Michael McCambridge added the points which brought their 21-year famine to an end.
