Freeman calls for 'Banty' to be reinstated

Monaghan's Damien Freeman
Damien Freeman has pleaded with the Monaghan county board to do everything in their power to reinstate Seamus McEnaney as manager.

McEnaney, who was set to continue in the role for another three years, has decided not to reapply for the job after club delegates voted last week to seek nominations for the position. But former captain Freeman has urged officials to abandon their search for a new manager and make an unconditional offer to 'Banty'.

"If the county board wants Seamus as manager of Monaghan then they should go after him and give the job," the half back said.

"I can't see why that can't be done. If they are supposed to be supporting the man, that is what they should do. As players, we are very unhappy with the way our manager has been treated.

"We do not understand why the county board publicly backed Seamus McEnaney for another three-year term and then behind the scenes set up a process to invite nominations. We feel we have one of the best management teams in the country and cannot understand why we would be seeking nominations."

Club fixtures this weekend are set to prevent the players from meeting until next week amid suggestions that strike action could be in the offing.
