Padraig McMahon has been handed the Laois captaincy ahead of next month's Leinster SFC quarter-final against either Meath or Offaly.

The experienced Ballyroan clubman skippered the O'Moore County for the first time in a challenge match against Louth last week. His elevation to the role comes as no surprise as he has been seen as one of Laois' most natural leaders since making his championship debut against Tyrone in 2004.

"We said we wanted to see who showed up well during the league and Padraig certainly did that. He'd a very good league campaign, he's a good leader and I'm sure he'll be a good captain too," Laois selector Dermot Murphy said.

Laois beat Louth in last Wednesday's challenge but lost to Down at the weekend. The management are hoping to arrange another challenge for this weekend.
