NFL 1: Mayo book final place

April 11, 2010

Cork's Fintan Goold with Andy Moran of Mayo during the NFL Division 1 game at Pairc Ui Chaoimh - INPHO
Mayo are through to the Division One final following a 0-16 to 0-11 victory over sluggish Cork at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

The Rebels were already through to the decider and the fact that they had little to play for was evident as they were outscored by 0-9 to 0-4 in the second half

An entertaining first half had finished with the sides level: 0-7 each.

Alan Dillon and Fintan Gould traded early points. Dillon popped over a free and Gould again levelled before Conor Mortimer and Dillon made it 0-4 to 0-2 to the visitors with a couple of frees.

Three consecutive Rebel County points from Ciaran McMahon, Donnacha O'Connor and Colm O'Neill put Cork ahead before Mortimer levelled it at 0-5 each - an exciting start to the match.

The next four points were also shared - John Hayes hit two good scores from play for the Leesiders but corner back Chris Barrett and midfielder Seamus O'Shea had the Connacht champions level at the break.

Mark Ronaldson, Andy Moran and Conor Mortimer fired successive points on the restart to make it 0-10 to 0-7 in favour of the visitors.

Dillon made it 0-12 to 0-7 and Cork got the next point to leave four in it. Two Aidan O'Shea points made it 0-15 to 0-9 with twelve minutes to play.

O'Connor pulled back a Cork point to leave five in it with as many minutes left. But the match never really got going as a contest and it will certainly be different when these two meet again in the final.
