The Roscommon senior football team have been dealt a blow with the news veteran Gary Cox has been forced to retire from the game due to a persistent ankle problem.

The 30-year-old has been hindered by injury in recent years and his loss is sure to be felt by Fergal McDonnell's team, who have not enjoyed a good start to their Division Three campaign in the NFL after losing the opening two games to Cavan and Fermanagh, respectively.

"I am disappointed," said Cox. "I had full intended on going back for another year at least. We had a good year last year and we have some lovely young footballers coming through, so it's a shame." Tweet
