All systems go for John Joe

Former Donegal manager John Joe Doherty
John Joe Doherty was a happy man after watching his charges open their NFL account with a win.

Donegal - recent winners of the McKenna Cup - started sluggishly in the Division Two encounter against Westmeath on Sunday but totally bossed the game from the second quarter onwards to win by seven points.

Their manager insists the season started in earnest in Mullingar and is pleased to have come away with the win:

"This was the start of the year as far as we were concerned - the McKenna Cup is history now.

"Our first 20 minutes weren't too hot but thankfully we pulled ourselves back into it.

"We want to try to make shapes in the league this year and coming down here and getting a win - getting a win from any Leinster team - is great."
