Mick Higgins RIP

Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Críostóir Ó Cuana has paid tribute to Cavan's multiple All-Ireland winner Mick Higgins who passed away today after a recent illness at the age of 87.

The Mountnugent/Kilnaneck clubman, who was more recently a member of Ramor Utd, won All-Ireland medals in 1947, '48 and '52, when he captained the victorious Cavan team and trained the Cavan Minor All Ireland winning team of 1959.

He was one of the last surviving members of the renowned '47 winning team that beat Kerry in the famous New York Polo Grounds final.

The GAA President said: "Mick made an immense contribution to the Association over a prolonged period, a contribution that is still felt and appreciated today, nowhere more than in his native Cavan. His exhibition of dead ball kicking in the 1952 final win over Meath when he accounted for seven of his team's final tally of nine points in a four point win, underlined the standards of excellence he set in his play.

"However it is no surprise that the success in New York still stands out as milestone date in the history of Cavan GAA and he played his role in that achievement."

In a recent interview when asked what he would like to be remembered for, Higgins replied, "that I never hit anyone, I played a clean game and I was never put off".

The GAA President offered his condolences to his wife, Margaret, son John, daughters Terry, Jean and Brenda and the wider Higgins family.

Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
