Dooley and Brady scoop Offaly awards

December 09, 2009
Tullamore hurling captain Shane Dooley and his Clara football counterpart Scott Brady have been named as the Offaly Senior Players of the Year. The pair will be honoured at the Offaly GAA/Bridge House Hotel annual awards night on Friday, January 8 after skippering their respective clubs to senior championship glory this year. It promises to be a great night for the Brady family as Scott's younger brother Ross will pick up the Under 21 Footballer of the Year award. Dooley's first cousin and Shinrone player Michael Cleary is the Junior Hurler of the Year. Meanwhile, Clara were named as Offaly Club of the Year at last night's county convention. Sean Foran of Edenderry and Andy Gallagher of Tullamore have been chosen to receive the Hall of Fame awards in football and hurling respectively. Foran was a star Offaly player in the 1950s and early '60s and among the highlights of his playing career was helping his county to win a first ever Leinster SFC title in 1960. He later served as a selector when Offaly won the All-Ireland final in 1982. Gallagher is currently county board treasurer as well as a Leinster Council delegate. A long-serving hurling goalkeeper for Tullamore and Offaly, his other achievements included managing Offaly to a historic Leinster SHC breakthrough in 1980 and the All-Ireland title in 1981. In all, 15 awards will be presented to hurlers, footballers, referees, a handballer and, of course, the Hall of Fame inductees. Medals will also be presented on the night to the Offaly panel which won the National Hurling League Division 2 final in 2009.
