Former Laois keeper Fergal Byron
New Laois under 21 football manager Pat Roe has announced that Fergal Byron and Portarlington clubman Niall Slevin will be his selectors in 2010. The appointment of the trio was ratified at Monday night's county board meeting in Portlaoise. Former All-Star goalkeeper Byron was set to be part of Leo Turley's backroom team in the event of him landing the job, but he has now decided to throw in his lot with Roe, who has finally been given the opportunity to manage his native county after stints as senior boss in Carlow, Wexford and Offaly. "We are looking for players who are very interested in playing for Laois. It's not the easiest thing to play inter county football but it should be the pinnacle of a player's career," Roe told the Leinster Express. "We're looking for players who want to test themselves, it should never be easy to get onto a county squad and every player will have to prove to me how much they want to play for Laois. "Anyone who wants to play for the Laois under 21s should make themselves known to me or to the county board, we'll give everyone who's interested a fair look and I'll meet with all players who are interested to lay down the criteria for selection."
