Senior semi-final day in three provinces
November 09, 2009
Dunloy are AIB GAA Ulster SH champions; Corofin and Charlestown have qualified for the Connacht SF final; it's senior hurling semi-final day in Leinster and Munster next Sunday and senior football semi-final day in Ulster; the football semi-finalists have been decided in Leinster and Munster.
Kiltimagh (Mayo) are Connacht JF champions; St. Gall's (Antrim) and Naomh Colm Cille (Tyrone) have captured the intermediate and junior hurling titles respectively in Ulster.
Those are headlines from the AIB GAA provincial club championships so far. The hectic pace continues next weekend with action all over the country. The main focus will on the Leinster and Munster senior hurling semi-finals and the Ulster football semi-finals.
AIB GAA LEINSTER SH SEMI-FINALS
Sunday: Ballyhale Shamrocks (Kilkenny) v Ballyboden St.Enda's (Dublin), Nowlan Park, 2.30pm; Clonkill (Westmeath) v Tullamore (Offaly), Mullingar, 2.30pm.
Defending Leinster champions, Ballyhale Shamrocks, who are bidding to reach their third final in four seasons, beat Oulart-the Ballagh (Wexford) by 2-20 to 1-21 (after extra-time) in the first round to set up a clash with Ballyboden St.Enda's who booked their place in the provincial series with a 1-16 to 0-12 win over Craobh Chiarain in the Dublin final.
Dublin stars, Conal Keaney, Gary Maguire, Shane Durkin, David Curtin, David Sweeney and Tim Sweeney and Wexford's Malachy Travers were all very much to the fore for Ballyboden who are bidding to reach the final for the second time in three seasons, having lost to Birr (Offaly) in the 2007 decider.
TJ Reid (2-4) and Henry Shefflin (0-7) were Ballyhale's top scorers against Oulart but the Kilkenny champions have several other potential match-winners aboard too, including county stars James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick, Michael Fennelly and Eoin Reid.
Clonkill will be attempting to become the first Westmeath club to reach the Leinster final when they take on Tullamore in the other semi-final. They made an impressive start to their bid when beating Clough-Ballacolla (Laois) by 1-21 to 2-12 in the first round.
Brendan Murtagh score 1-9 for Clonkill as they powered to victory to set up a semi-final clash with Tullamore who will be experiencing Leinster action for the first time after winning a first Offaly title since 1964. They beat Kilcormac/Killoughey by 2-12 to 0-11 in the Offaly final in a game where Shane Dooley scored 0-7 for the winners. Two veterans made a huge contribution to the win with 48 year-old Damien Fox in goal and player-manager, Kevin Martin scoring 1-1 at the other end. Martin was appointed Westmeath manager last week so this will give him an opportunity to assess the county champions at first hand.
Birr are attempting to become the fifth Offaly club to reach the Leinster final, following in the footsteps of Birr, St.Rynagh's, Kinnitty and Coolderry.
AIB GAA MUNSTER SH SEMI-FINALS
Sunday: Newtownshandrum (Cork) v Adare (Limerick), Pairc Ui Chaoimh, 2.0; Ballygunner (Waterford) v Cratloe (Clare), Walsh Park, 2.30.
Newtownshandrum are bidding to reach their third Munster final, having previously qualified in 2003 and 2005, both of which they won. They put down a clear marker in the first round last Sunday week when they came from six points behind to beat Thurles Sarsfields (Tipperary) by 0-19 to 1-15.
Ben O'Connor, who scored 0-8 and his brother Jerry were at the heart of Newtownshandrum's best efforts while Brendan and Pat Mulcahy, Cathal Naughton and Ryan Clifford also impressed.
Adare reached last year's Munster final where they lost by two points to De La Salle (Waterford) and are back on the title trail after beating Na Piarsaigh by 1-17 to 0-3 in the Limerick final.
Mark Foley, Wayne McNamara, Donncha Sheahan and Timmy Houlihan bring vast experience to the Adare camp as they attempt to upset the Cork champions.
Ballygunner last reached the Munster final in 2005 (they lost to Newtownshandrum) and will be hoping for a return to the big time against Munster championship debutants, Cratloe of Clare.
Ballygunner were crowned Waterford champions in dramatic circumstances, having beaten Lismore by a point (1-17 to 0-19) in a replayed county final. Paul Flynn, Fergal Hartley, Andy Moloney and Shane O'Sullivan bring huge experience which they hope will prove crucial against the Clare champions.
AIB GAA ULSTER SF SEMI-FINALS
Next Sunday: St. Gall's (Antrim) v Clontibret (Monaghan), Athletic Grounds, Armagh, 2.30; Kilcoo (Down) v Loup (Derry), Casement Park, 2.30.
St. Gall's are attempting to reach the final for the third time in five seasons. They won the title in 2005 but lost to Crossmaglen Rangers two year ago. The Antrim champions have already made a clear statement of intent, having beaten Cavan Gaels (1-12 to 1-10) and Pearse Og (Armagh) (0-10 to 0-8) to reach the last four.
Clontibret booked a place in the semi-finals with a two-point win (0-10 to 0-8) over Tyrone champions, Dromore last Sunday, with Conor McManus kicking 0-5.
Loup, who last won the Ulster title in 2003, clinched a place in this year's semi-finals with a four-point win (1-10 to 1-6) over Derrygonnelly (Fermanagh) last Sunday and now take on Kilcoo who marked their first appearance in the Ulster championship with a four-point win (0-13 to 0-9) over St. Eunan's (Donegal).
Paul Devlin scored six points for the Down champions while Paul McFlynn scored 0-5 for Loup and both are likely to be key figures again on Sunday.
