Offaly's PJ Ward
By Randal Scally
Offaly football star PJ Ward had a miraculous escape when his car spun out of control on the M6 motorway near Rochfortbridge, Co. Westmeath last Wednesday morning.
Ward was travelling from his home in Kilbeggan to Dublin where he works as a prison officer when one of the tyres on his Audi A4 suffered a blow-out, and caused him to lose control of the vehicle. His car went under the trailer of an articulated truck and hit a safety barrier before it eventually came to a standstill.
"It was a frightening experience - the car did two 360 degree turns, went under the truck I was overtaking and hit the crash barrier than divides the dual carriageway," he explained.
Miraculously, Ward walked away from the crash with only minor injuries.
"I did damage to my neck and shoulder, but that was about the height of it. I was very lucky. I was told I could have been killed if I had been driving a smaller car. Apparently, Audi are one of the safest cars to drive."
Ward, who transferred from his native Westmeath to Offaly three years ago, hopes to be back playing football within a month.
"The Prison Officers are playing the Dublin GAA Coaches in the Dublin Inter-firms final shortly and I hope to be back for that," he added.
