Dunloy celebrate their Antrim SHC success
Dunloy 3-14 Cushendall 1-13 Dunloy wrestled back the Antrim senior hurling championship crown from Cushendall yesterday afternoon thanks to three first-half goals that proved decisive at Casement Park. The defending champions had threatened to make the better start to this affair when they missed an early goal chance from Eamon Laverty, but two more chances at raising the green flag went to waste shortly after wards for the Ruairi Ogs. In contrast, Dunloy found the net in the eighth minute when Gregory O'Kane threaded Paddy Richmond through and nine minutes later Richmond was impeded in the Cushendall square for a penalty, which 'keeper Gareth McGhee blasted past his opposite number his opposite number Ronan Kearney for a second major. Karl McKeegan responded with a couple of points for the trailers, but Dunloy still had time to get another goal before half-time when Richmond's pass found Darren Quinn in plenty of space to finish low and hard for a 3-6 to 0-7 lead at the break. In the second-half both sides squandered further goal chances with penalty misses, and it took Cushendall an entire 15 minutes to get their first score of the half, meanwhile Richmond and O'Kane had done further damage down the other end for would-be winners. McKeegan's frees kept Cushendall within some sort of touching distance, but not even eight minutes of added time could save them after Neil McManus had bundled a shot to the net in the 67th minute.
