Carr feels for retiring Whelan

Tommy Carr says Ciaran Whelan's failure to win an All-Ireland medal during his 14-year Dublin football career will haunt him for a long time to come.
The Cavan manager also failed to land a coveted Celtic Cross during his long Dublin career - something even now he regrets.
"Dublin last won one in 1995, I retired in '94 and Ciaran came on the scene in '96," he said in the Irish Daily Star.
"It's hard to walk away without that medal. There's a sense of failure about it and it stays with you for a long time.
"Once in a while it might pop into my head and I end up feeling frustrated, but for the most part it's something I got over a long time ago.
"I was able to say that there were a lot of players better than me that never won All-Irelands. Unfortunately, Ciaran won't be able to say that," added Carr, who was the Raheny man's manager from 1998 to 2001.
Meanwhile, Paul Bealin has described the midfielder's departure from the inter-county scene as a "huge blow to Dublin".
"They need him to stay because they don't have anyone waiting in the wings of his calibre," Whelan's former team-mate said.
"It will take Pat Gilroy a long time to find anyone as strong, athletic and intelligent as Ciaran in midfield. He has his mind made up, but Gilroy shouldn't take no for an answer from Ciaran."
