Cork SFC: Clon to face Barr's in final

August 31, 2009
Clonakilty will face St. Finbarr's in this year's Cork SFC final following their respective victories over Bishopstown and Carbery at Pairc Ui Rinn yesterday. A point by midfielder Sean Nagle with five minutes remaining handed Clonakilty a 0-11 to 1-7 victory over Bishopstown. It was tough luck on Bishopstown who paid a high price for wasting three guilt-edged chances late in the game. Paul O'Connor's 13th minute goal helped the city side to a 1-3 to 0-3 lead, and they went on to lead by 1-4 to 0-5 at half-time. However, four points in a five-minute spell after restart turned the tide in Clonakilty's favour, although no one in the 4,063 crowd would have complained if the game had ended in a draw. St. Finbarr's qualified for their first final since 1993 following their 1-11 to 0-9 victory over Nemo Rangers' quarter-final conquerors, Carbery. The divisional side's cause was not helped by the withdrawal of county star Alan O'Connor with a knee injury, with the Barr's midfield pairing of Eoin Keane and Aidan O'Shea making hay in his absence. The Togher club laid the foundations for their victory in the second quarter when they outscored their opponents by 1-5 to 0-2, with the goal coming from Cathal McCarthy. Jimmy Barry-Murphy's charges went on to lead by 1-7 to 0-4 at the break, and with former county star Fionan Murray to the fore, they maintained their advantage in the second half. The final is scheduled for October 18.
