Louth clubs hit with Eu3,000 fines

August 05, 2009
Glyde Rangers and Newtown Blues have been handed heavy fines for their part in a melee during a Louth SFC match, while a supporter who entered the field of play has been banned for 96 weeks. The penalties were imposed by Louth County Board after a mass brawl erupted at the end of a club game in Dromiskin at the end of July. The SFC clash between defending champions Newtown Blues and Glyde Rangers took place in Cluskey Park, with up to 100 supporters, players and officials becoming entangled in the ugly fracas in injury time. County player and Blues Hugh McGinn was involved in the initial flashpoint, when he was allegedly attacked by a Glyde supporter, who had run onto the pitch to confront him. Glyde were asked to identify the individual who came onto the field by the Louth CCC and having done so, the supporter was banned for 96 weeks and told he would not be allowed at any GAA games in the county during that period. Both clubs were fined Eu3,000 while McGinn was also hit with a one month ban, which applies to club games and will not stop his participation in Louth's All-Ireland JFC semi-final against Cork this Saturday.
