Meath's Colm Brady and John McDermott close in on Mayo's Ray Dempsey during the 1996 All Ireland Final
It's Mayo v Meath in the fourth GAA All-Ireland football quarter-final clash in Croke Park on Sunday in what will be the first championship meeting between the counties since the 1996 All-Ireland final which Meath won in a replay (2-9 to 1-11). Meanwhile, three of the four All-Ireland semi-finalists have been settled with Cork, Tyrone and Kerry all booking places over the weekend setting up the following pairings. August 23: Cork v Tyrone, Croke Park. August 30: Kerry v Mayo or Meath, Croke Park. MAYO v MEATH The counties reached this year's quarter-final via contrasting routes. Mayo powered their way to glory in the Connacht championship while Meath were eliminated by Dublin in the quarter final of the Leinster championship before re-launching themselves in the All-Ireland qualifiers, winning four successive rounds against Waterford, Westmeath, Roscommon and Limerick. Meath last reached the quarter-finals in 2007 where they beat Tyrone before losing to Cork in the semi-final. Mayo last reached the quarter-finals in 2006 where they beat Laois in a replay before beating Dublin in the semi-final. They lost to Kerry in the final. Both Meath and Mayo are attempting to reach the semi-final for the third time this decade. Meath reached the last four in 2001 and 2007 while Mayo qualified in 2004 and 2006. Last Championship Clash Meath 2-9 Mayo 1-11 (1996 All-Ireland final replay) A controversial start which saw Liam McHale (Mayo) and Colm Coyle (Meath) sent off after just five minutes gave way to a fascinating encounter in which Meath, who had snatched a late equaliser in the draw game, edged home by a single point. Mayo led by 1-6 to 1-2 at half-time but had to face the wind in the second half. However, they still led by two points with ten minutes remaining before team captain, Tommy Dowd hit Meath's second goal. James Horan levelled it up again but Brendan Reilly kicked the crucial winning point late on.
