Ill Stynes quitting Melbourne post

July 01, 2009

Jim Stynes
Former Dublin minor star and Aussie Rules legend Jim Stynes is stepping down as chairman of Melbourne Football Club due to ill-health. Reports from Australia suggest that Stynes is to give up the top job because of an undisclosed illness. Stynes won an All-Ireland minor medal with Dublin in 1984 before going on to become a huge success in Australian Rules. He played 264 games for Melbourne and was awarded the AFL's highest honour when he received the Brownlow medal in 1991 before retiring in 1998. He had the distinction of representing both Ireland and Australia in the International Rules series in a playing and coaching capacity. Stynes succeeded Paul Gardner as Melbourne chairman in June of last year, but is now being forced to step down. His younger brother Brian was midfield on the last Dublin team to lift the Sam Maguire in 1995.
