Leinster chief alarmed by minor results

Michael Delaney
Leinster Council secretary Michael Delaney has vowed to act after some woefully one-sided results in the first round of the province's minor football championship last weekend. Delaney admitted that the disparity in some scorelines was "frightening" and will prompt a major internal examination of underage structures, especially in Wicklow and Louth after they were walloped by Kildare and Dublin respectively. Wicklow were trounced 4-19 to 0-5 by Kildare, while Louth were hammered 4-15 to 0-5 by Dublin. Kilkenny were also on the receiving end of a 0-5 to 3-19 drubbing at the hands of Wexford. "The Kilkenny result was par for the course, but certainly the scores involving Wicklow and Louth were shocking," the Laois man said. "It is surprising because I know firsthand the huge amount of work that's being done in those counties. We could pretend that these are freak results but there is absolutely no point in putting out heads in the sand. We will have to address this and I know our officials were talking about it as soon as they heard the results on Sunday. "We will have to dig deep, much deeper than these scorelines, to see what caused them."
