All-Ireland Club JFC: Brave Mitchel's make history
January 25, 2009
John Mitchel's 0-10
Killala 0-8
John Mitchels, Liverpool, wrote a new chapter in the history of the GAA yesterday in Carrick-on-Shannon by becoming the first British club side to win an All-Ireland semi-final.
Inspired by their outstanding man at centre-field, Paddy Mulligan, the Liverpool boys left it late to see off the challenge of Mayo champions Killala and earn their place into an All-Ireland decider at Croke Park.
Things didn't look good for Barry Morris' side as the favourites deservedly built up a 0-3 to 0-0 lead in the opening stages through the frees of full-forward Marcus Hannick, which were expertly sailed over from the ground.
Around the 20-minute mark Mitchel's had received their wake up call and levelled matters through ex-Cavan star Daryl McConnell, before the frees of Mulligan (2) and half-forward Rocky Ivers put them into a 0-7 to 0-4 lead at the break.
In the second-half, Mulligan pointed the Exiles four clear but Killala responded through Brendan Garvin, Hannick and Kevin White to bring the teams all square coming into the final ten.
In a tense finish, it looked as though the opportunity was slipping away for Mitchel's, but cometh the hour, cometh the man, as two unanswered points from Mulligan late on saw his side emerge victorious and poised to become the first British club side to play at Croke Park on February 14.
