January 13, 2009
After a highly enjoyable and competitive AIB GAA provincial club series pre-Christmas the focus now switches to the AIB GAA Club Championships All-Ireland campaigns in all grades leading to the St. Patrick's Day spectacular when Croke Park will host the senior hurling and football finals. There's quarter-final action at senior football and junior hurling level next weekend with the fixtures as follows: Saturday AIB GAA All-Ireland Hurling Junior Club Championship Quarter-Final: Skehana (Galway) v John Mitchells (Warwickshire), Ballinasloe, 2.30pm (Extra-time if necessary) Sunday AIB GAA All-Ireland football senior Club Championship Quarter-Final: Tir Chonaill Gaels (London) v Corofin (Galway), Ruislip, 2.00pm. TIR CHONAILL GAELS v COROFIN Tir Chonaill Gaels are making their third attempt in four seasons to reach the AIB GAA Club Championships All-Ireland Semi-Final but face a huge task against a highly impressive Corofin side that marched confidently to the Connacht title. However, the Galway and Connacht champions will have to be at their best against a formidable Tir Chonaill Gaels side who are appearing in the quarter-final for a second successive year. They lost to Crossmaglen Rangers (Armagh) by 0-10 to 0-6 last year. In 2006, Tir Chonaill Gaels lost out to eventual AIB GAA Club Championships All-Ireland champions, Salthill-Knocknacarra (Galway) by 0-9 to 0-5 in the quarter-final. Corofin, the 1998 AIB GAA Club Championships All-Ireland champions, beat Castlerea St.Kevin's (Roscommon) by 1-14 to 0-8 in the Connacht semi-final before securing the title for a fourth time when beating Eastern Harps (Sligo) by 0-11 to 0-6 in the final last November. The winners will play Kilmacud Crokes (Dublin) in the semi-final on February 21 while Dromcollogher-Broadford (Limerick) will play Crossmaglen Rangers (Armagh) in the other semi-final on the same day.
