All-Ireland club IHC: Gort na Mona see off London champs
December 22, 2008
Antrim's Gort na Mona finished strongly to account for London champions Robert Emmets in the All-Ireland intermediate club hurling quarter-final at Casement Park on Saturday.
Gort na Mona..3-7
Robert Emmets..0-10
The eventual winners overcome the dismissal of goalkeeper Gerard McVeigh in the 22nd minute to win by six points after Robert Emmets had staged a strong second half comeback. McVeigh was red-carded following a robust tackle on Emmets full forward Sean Quinn. The London champions were rewarded a penalty as a result of the incident, but former Antrim minor goalkeeper Conor McCann's shot was stopped by one of the Gort na Mona defenders.
Despite being reduced to 14 players, the home side went into the break leading 2-4 to 0-5 thanks to a brace of goals from Patrick McCaffrey. But with Kevin McMullan hitting 0-5, including 0-1 from a penalty, Emmets fought back to draw level with just three minutes remaining, 2-4 to 0-10.
Gort na Mona were not to be denied, however, and they sealed victory with three late points and a fortuitous goal from Ciaran Quinn.
