Rampant Drumhowan cruise to victory

December 02, 2008
Drumhowan 5-10 Lissan 0-5 A rampant Drumhowan cruised to an almost facile win over Derry champions Lissan in this one sided Ulster junior final in Brewster Park on Sunday last. Played in good conditions this was a game that Drumhowan dominated form start to finish with Lissan unable to contain them in any department. Drumhowan settled to the task from the off and served notice that they were well up for this final. Disciplined defending and an ability to mount fast counter attacks was the hall mark of their first half performance and they were not at all flattered by their twelve points margin at the break. James McElroy who was proving a handful for the Lissan defence opened the scoring with a point inside the first minute and from there Drumhowan took increasing control. They struck a major blow to Lissan's hopes in the 6th minute when Stephen McGinnity rifled to the Lissan net after good work by Kevin Mooney and Gerard Duffy. By the early minutes of the second quarter they had extended their lead to eleven points, a second goal by Gerard Duffy after Stephen McGinnity had robbed possession as Lissan came out of defence putting them eleven clear. Lissan eventually got off he mark in the 27th minute with a point from a free by Patrick Coey but Drumhowan finished strongly for a brace from James McElroy, one form a free to leave the half time score Drumhowan 2-7, Lissan 0-1. Lissan made a promising start to the second half and did pull back a couple of early points but Drumhowan soon settled back into their dominant position and two goals in a blistering four minute spell by Kieran Mooney and man of the match James McElroy effectively settled the issue. Lissan were now only offering token resistance and Drumhowan cruised into the All Ireland semi final with a further goal and a point, the goal by substitute Colm Lambe capping a great come back from injury for the team captain.
