Carlow board to probe under 21 final brawl
December 02, 2008
Carlow county board officials are set to launch an investigation into the disgraceful scenes which caused last weekend's under 21 hurling final to be abandoned.
Fighting involving up to 20 players from reigning champions Naomh Eoin and Erin's Own broke out in injury-time, leaving referee Pat Moran with no option but to call a halt to proceedings.
Myshall side Naomh Eoin scored a second goal to take a three-point lead in injury-time but, with a minute of added time still remaining, Erin's Own were awarded a free within scoring distance. When their opponents delayed handing over the sliothar, a scuffle broke out which quickly developed into a free-for-all in the centre of the field, with one player wielding his hurl during the melee.
Carlow secretary Tom O'Neill said the county board will launch an investigation as soon as they have received the referee's report.
Moran was also the man in the middle for the infamous 2005 senior hurling final in his native Laois, which resulted in two-years bans for both Castletown and Camross which were later lifted after a lengthy appeals process.
Meanwhile, the re-fixed Offaly minor football semi-final between Edenderry and St. Vincent's finally took place at the weekend with Edenderry progressing to next Sunday's final against Tullamore. The original fixture, which took place nearly two months ago, was abandoned after a mass brawl erupted.
