Whelan lauds Gilroy's character

November 30, 2008
Mickey Whelan believes that Pat Gilroy will be a success during his time as Dublin's football manager. The Metropolitans new team trainer thinks that the team has suffered some bad luck in recent times, but is hopeful of a new horizon on the dawn for the Leinster kingpins "I don't think anything has held Dublin back," said Whelan. "It's just been the breaks - they haven't got them. "They won four Leinster championships, and on two different occasions they were on the verge of going to the next stage. On both days they had a bad break, so you can't legislate for that. The St Vincent's clubman has committed himself to Dublin under Gilroy's new reign, and has lauded him for his "special character" and the contribution he has paid to both club and county in his playing days. "If I didn't think I could contribute in some way, I wouldn't be involved. I love to be involved in sport, and Gaelic football in particular, and naturally in Dublin," said Whelan. "Gilroy is a special character who has been a great player for me, for Vincent's and for Dublin. Gilroy had talent, and as he got older, he got more talented in the cerebral part of the game. "As players get older they bring something you can't buy; they bring experience and they know when something needs to be done in a game. He plays this role magnificently, and there wasn't a game with Vincent's he didn't contribute hugely in. "He's a very successful man in life, he's got a very good personality, is a bright guy and he's going to do well with Dublin. He's going to do a good job," he added. Whelan cites both Kerry and All-Ireland champions Tyrone as the bar that Dublin most now surpass if the county is to end it's 14-year wait for an All-Ireland title. "I certainly think the two of them are ahead of everybody," he said. They are out there and they are the goals to be aimed at, they are the ones we have to surpass."
