Cumann na mBunscol: Urban Schools Finals Reports
November 11, 2008
The urban finals were on Saturday last with CBS Dundalk, Blackrock and St. Joseph's CBS taking silverware.
Flood Cup
CBS Dundalk 2-6 1-6 De La Salle Dundalk
CBS Dundalk claimed the Flood Cup on Saturday last but were pushed all the way by a fired up De La Salle. The first half saw the CBS take advantage of the blustery conditions. Goals from captain Ryan Murphy and Caoimhin Leonard as well as a minor from midfielder Ruairi Cooney helped CBS on their way to a 2-1 to 0-2 half time lead with points from Dean O Donnell and Gauthier Foto helping to keep De La Salle in touch. The second half saw De La Salle emerge a different team and points from Kalum McConville and substitute Ryan Carroll as well as a goal and a point from Micheal O Connor saw De La Salle move right into contention. A string of fine saves from CBS goalkeeper John Burlingham gave them the platform to maintain their push for the Flood Cup. Taking heart from their keepers fine saves CBS began to regain control and two points from Christopher Sweeney and another from Liam Lynch gave them a 3 point lead at the final whistle.
McCabe Cup
Blackrock 4-6 0-1 Callystown
A superb performance from Blackrock N.S. ensured the Sean McCabe trophy would be heading North on Saturday afternoon after they beat a young Callystown team. Eilishe Fingleton and Eva Hoey controlled the midfield for the most part with the former kicking some magnificent scores. Try as Callystown might they just couldn't seem to find a way through a Blackrock rearguard that included Niamh Smith and Poppy Van Dijk. At half back Alanah Kelly and Ellen MacEnaney pushed forward at every opportunity and but for Callystown goalkeeper Claire Kirwan, Blackrock may well have added to their tally.
McCardle Cup
St. Joseph's C.B.S. 1-7 1-5 Blackrock N.S.
After six years and two runners up medals later St.Jospeh's C.B.S. are once again the Division 1 Primary Schools Champions. In what was a pulsating encounter St. Joseph's emerged victorious despite a superb comeback from the defending champions who were never going to relinquish their title easily.
In a frenzied start St. Joseph's kicked numerous wides before Blackrock stormed up the field and pointed through their star man James Dunne. St. Joseph's responded well and were soon settled and into their stride however with a blustery cross wind scores were hard to come by. It took them over 10 minutes to score their first point, a free by Adam O Connor, and this was quickly followed by another from Sean Bannon. Bannon was then denied by the cross bar. Some super saves by Blackrock goalkeeper Bill Wells denied St. Joseph's and another free before half time from O Connor helped St. Joseph's into a 3 points to 1 half time lead. The second half began as the first half ended with both teams tearing into each other. The Drogheda school pointed first through O Connor but this was quickly cancelled out by a free from James Dunne. Ahu Obhakhan majored soon after to give St. Joseph's a five point lead and a point from substitute Aaron Ryan seemed to have set them on their way to victory. However this Blackrock team were not champions for no reason and after another point from James Dunne, Patrick Geoghegan goaled and it was very much game on. Another score quickly followed through Ronan O Hare and within minutes James Dunne had popped over the equalising point. From here on in it was end-to-end stuff. There was a point blank save from the Blackrock keeper as well as some near misses from Ross Guildea and Gerard Harding for St. Joseph's before another substitute Jamie Kelly popped up with a point with 2 minutes of play remaining. In injury time and with the last kick of the game John McDonnell pointed from long range to ensure victory for St. Joseph's, completing a unique treble of the U11, U12 and U13 titles, the first time this has been done in the schools history.
