Longford star heads to Oz

November 06, 2008
The exodus of young GAA players heading to Australia to play Aussie Rules continues as Longford minor star Michael Quinn has just signed a two-contract with AFL side Essendon. Quinn jetted down under this week, where he will begin his career in Aussie Rules after he impressed the club during a trial earlier in the year. The Killoe forward was widely tipped to be a future star for Longford seniors, but that has now been put on hold for the next two years at least. And Quinn admits that he can't wait to get started in his new career, while he's determined to make the most of the opportunity given to him. "It's a two-year contract that I have signed," said Quinn. "It's something I have always wanted to do, to go and play professionally. "I can't wait. It's very different from training over here in that you get up in the morning and train from 9-5pm and that's it. Back home, you might be in college all day and then you would have to go out and train in the evening so it's different from that side of things."
