Three in a row for brilliant Cooley

October 30, 2008
Cooley Kickhams' superb 1-7 to 0-8 defeat of county champions Newtown Blues at Clan na Gael Park heralded their third successive Cardinal O'Donnell Cup success. The peninsula men have been Division One specialists of late and they retained the Cup with a remarkable smash-and-grab effort. The Blues led by six points with 21 minutes remaining but Cooley battled back before Australia-bound Brian Donnelly turned the match on its head with the winning goal in the 57th minute. Victory marked the end of Gary Thornton's reign as Cooley manager. Thornton had three years at the helm and, though he failed narrowly to deliver the Joe Ward, his record of three Cardinal O'Donnells is pretty special.
