Spillane blasts fixture farce in Kingdom

October 10, 2008
Kenmare manager and 'Sunday Game's presenter Pat Spillane has expressed his frustration at the lack of continuity in this year's Kerry senior football championship. Spillane, whose charges go into Sunday's quarter-final against Mid-Kerry at Killarney as rank outsiders, is highly critical of the delay caused to all the local championships by the county side's involvement in the All-Ireland final. He fumed: "Our present fixtures structure is a complete farce. Putting it very simply, the ordinary club players around the county are being highly blackguarded. You could go to any parish in Kerry and the response will be the same. "I see the Templenoe lads (Spillane's home club) idle for three months of the summer. It is an absolute joke. Kenmare's last game in the senior county championship was back in the middle of May. How can anyone prepare a team or motivate fellas in that situation?" The Kingdom legend said there was no reason why club players couldn't be provided with championship games throughout the summer. "We are wrapping our players up in cotton wool at inter-county level and I don't think it works. This thing about intensity in training is rubbish. You sharpen your skills on the field of play." He added: "Look at Cork today. They are playing their county final and they only played one game less than us in the championship. The Kilkenny hurlers go back to their clubs after inter-county games."
