Naughton: Dublin wanted bigger name

October 09, 2008
Tommy Naughton has revealed that he decided to step down as Dublin hurling boss because the county board and players were seeking a more high-profile manager. As speculation continues to mount that former Tipperary player and manager Nicky English will be offered the position, Naughton confirmed that he and his management pulled out on September 14 after initially expressing an interest in continuing. "The feeling is that the county board, and the players, are looking for a high-profile person now to bring them on another step," he said. "Given those circumstances, we had no wish to stay there and possibly complicate the situation. If that's the feeling and there is somebody out there, then let them come forward and get on with it and we'll see how it goes. My attitude is that whatever is best for Dublin hurling is what is important."
