Model part company with Meyler

Wexford manager John Meyler
Wexford have confirmed the news that John Meyler will not continue as their senior hurling manager. Speculation had been mounting during the day that there would be an announcement from the Model County regarding Meyler's position as he met with the county board recently and they informed him that his term would not be extended. Under his stewardship Wexford qualified for an All-Ireland semi-final in 2007 with a famous win over Tipperary and this year were only narrowly beaten by Waterford in a quarter-final tie. An outspoken manager, the Cork man's views were not always well received in the south east and the rumour mill had been in overdrive that he would not continue in the role for 2009. That news has now been confirmed by the county board who issued a statement this evening. "Wexford GAA County board announces that John Meyler's name will not be going forward for the position of Senior Hurling Manager for 2009," read the statement issued by county PRO Mary Foley. "The Board acknowledges his contribution over the last years and wishes him well in the future."
