October 06, 2008
Ballygalget John Mitchel's 2-13 Portaferry St Patrick's 0-9 Ballygalget John Mitchel's picked up their 16th Down Senior Hurling Championship crown with an emphatic ten-point victory over Portaferry St Patrick's at McKenna Park, Ballycran on Sunday. It was Portaferry who registered the first score of the game through Paul Braffin four minutes in, but Martin Coulter thundered in a goal two minutes later to make sure the initiative lied with the John Mitchel's side as they struck over six more points to their opponents' three for a 1-6 to 0-4 lead at the break. Niall Magee sent over a quick score moments within the restart to bring the deficit down to four, but when Barry Coulter slipped in Shane Ballie for Ballygalget for a second goal the game was all but over. Martin Coulter pucked over three more singles to bring his tally match tally to 1-4, which were backed up by substitutes Johnny McGrattan and Paddy Coulter tagging on a brace of points each before Braffin hit three accurate placed balls towards the end to take off some of the tarnish for St Patrick's.
