Galway GAA is mourning the death of county senior hurling panellist Paul Flynn who died in a tragic road accident on Sunday morning.
Aged 24, the Limerick-based garda died after his car crashed into a wall outside Loughrea. Poignantly, he was due to graduate from the Garda College in Templemore in the coming weeks.
A member of the Tommie Larkins team which contested the All-Ireland intermediate club final last February, Paul was a rising star of Galway hurling and was expected to break into the senior team in the next year or two. He won an All-Ireland under 21 medal as a corner back in 2005, and featured at wing back on the Galway intermediate side that lost this year's All-Ireland semi-final to Kilkenny.
Tommie Larkins club chairman Eamon Whelan said the Woodford-Ballinakill area was in shock at the death of the popular young man.
"It is terrible news. Everyone is numbed here. People couldn't believe it when word came through. They are in shock."
GAA President Nickey Brennan also expressed his sympathies and those of the Association to the family of the hurler.
Brennan said that Paul was an excellent hurler and a wonderful sportsman who was very committed to his club and county. He expressed condolences on behalf of the Association to Paul's family and friends, to his Garda Siochana colleagues and to his club and county team mates at this sad and very difficult time.
Paul is survived by his parents Gerry and Roseanne, his three brothers and two sisters.
