Galway SFC: Corofin leave Shamrocks out of luck

October 06, 2008
Corofin 0-8 Cortoon Shamrocks 0-5 Corofin emerged from Sunday's lacklustre Galway Senior Football Championship final as champions with three left points to spare over Cortoon Shamrocks at Pearse Stadium. Alan O'Donovan sent over the game's opening score after just 28 seconds for Corofin, but his side would fail to register another score until the added on minutes of the half. Derek Savage broke through on four minutes to level matters and former county minor star Michael Martin pushed Cortoon two in front on the quarter with a pair of well taken frees. The game went scoreless for 17 minutes with both sides sending some poor chances the wrong side of the posts before O'Donovan and Gary Sice levelled the match at the break with a white flag each. An inspiring point from David Warde regained the lead for the Shamrocks early on in the restart, but singles from Michael Comer, David Hanley and Joe Canney pushed the favourites into a 0-6 to 0-4 lead on 47 minutes. Martin's third free brought the difference down to the minimum three minutes later, but O'Donovan and Canney were on hand again to fire over and point Corofin towards the finish-line for their side's ninth Galway SFC crown since 1991, and 12th in all.
