Womens Celtic Sports Festival goes from strength to strength

October 02, 2008
The third annual feile na mBan, Glasgow Women's Celtic sports festival continues to exceed the expectations of the organisers with twelve teams from throughout Ireland and the UK descending on a Glasgow housing estate this weekend to take part in a gaelic football and camogie (womens hurling) competition.   The Tir Conaill harps gaelic athletic club exists to promote the celtic sports of gaelic football, camogie, hurling and shinty to young people in Glasgow.  The festival is aimed at young women to get more involved in the club and also gaelic sport in general.    Over the years the club has built a positive reputation for working with young people in communities affected by many social problems.  In recent months they have set up a gaelic football club in the Royston area which is really taken off.  Only last week they had a group of children from the area on a tour to the west of Ireland which was a great experience for them. We are very much a community based club and see it is important for the club and the city that ordinary Glaswegians are offered the opportunity to witness major sporting events on their doorstep.  Last year it was in the east end and this time we chose Royston due to local interest in our community clubs in the area explained Club Development and Health Promotion Officer, Tommy Main.   The venue is Glenconner Park and spectators or those willing to have a go at a new sport, or participate in coaching courses are more than welcome.  The local Royston Youth Action committee will be running a community café throughout. The highlight of the weekend will no doubt be the hosting of a Scotland V Ireland womens shinty/camogie compromise game played under International rules.  The Scotland team will include no less than five members of the Harps team who won the Scottish Women's Shinty Championship last month.   Events start on Friday on the old bowling green at Glenconner with a coaching session involving pupils from four local school.  This will be facilitated by coaches from the Connacht Council who are supporting the event as are the Sports council for Glasgow.
