Brennan hails Galway's 'yes' vote

October 01, 2008
GAA president Nickey Brennan has welcomed Galway's vote to enter the Leinster hurling championship, but insists that he will not be "counting his chickens" ahead of Saturday's Special Congress vote. Galway delegates voted 66-54 in a secret ballot on Monday night to support the proposal which requires a simple majority at Special Congress to be implemented on a trial basis for three years. It was a decision which came as a relief to Brennan who is keen to see both Galway and Antrim included in an expanded Leinster championship. "There was 11 speakers at the Galway meeting, nine of whom spoke against it and two who spoke for it. You will always find that those who are against something tend to be the ones who generally do most of the talking," he said. "I am pleased with it. Let's get on with Saturday now. I really don't want to make any more of it. Hopefully we can get it through. I am not resting on my laurels, I've still more work to do between now and Saturday to make sure we can get it over the line." Brennan also welcomed Meath's decision to join Kilkenny in backing the proposal after four other Leinster counties - Dublin, Wexford, Offaly and Westmeath - voted against it. "I am pleased that Meath have come out. They have seen the bigger picture. I will give credit to the hurling people in Meath who are as passionate a hurling people as there is to be found anywhere. They deserve a lot of credit for it. "Who knows, maybe the other counties who opposed it, in the light of everything over the past few days, they might reflect and have a different view come Saturday."
