Player of the Year nominees announced
September 30, 2008
The GAA Player of the Year awards in both football and hurling will go to a new recipient this year following the announcement of the shortlist of nominees on Monday night.
In football, Tyrone duo Sean Cavanagh and Brian Dooher have been nominated alongside Kerry's Colm 'Gooch' Cooper. Cavanagh, who will captain Ireland in next month's International Rules series, is favourite to land the gong after his man of the match performance in the All-Ireland final.
Kilkenny pair Eoin Larkin and Eddie Brennan join Waterford full forward Eoin Kelly in the nominations for the hurling award. This means there is no nomination for another of Kilkenny's All-Ireland heroes, JJ Delaney, who had been tipped by many to get the award.
In the Young Player of the Year category, the hurling nominees are Cork's Cathal Naughton, Joe Canning of Galway and Seamus Callinan of Tipperary. All three have also been nominated for All-Stars.
In the football category, Limerick's Ian Ryan and Laois' Johnny O'Loughlin will be hoping to give their counties their first ever Young Player of the Year awards in the code. However, they will have stiff competition from Kerry's Tommy Walsh, who is favourite for the award.
The winners will be announced live on television at the GAA All-Stars banquet at Dublin's CityWest Hotel on October 17.
