Down clubhouse destroyed in blaze
September 26, 2008
A GAA club preparing to play in the Down JFC final on Sunday has been left devastated after their clubhouse was destroyed by fire earlier today.
The fire and rescue service were called to St. John's clubhouse at Drumnaquoile, near Castlewellan at about 7am. It is not yet known what started the blaze, but an arson attack has not been ruled out.
St. John's officer Jacqui McMullan claimed "hundreds of thousands of pounds worth" of damage had been caused.
She added: "We had refurbishing done, equipment and a lot of valuable trophies. On Sunday, we are going to play a junior championship final in Newry so this is a big day coming up. Now we have been set back a bit."
