Offaly reject hurling proposals
September 26, 2008
The GAA's plans to restructure the All-Ireland hurling championship look doomed after Offaly became the latest county to vote again Galway and Antrim's entry into next year's Leinster championship.
Delegates in the Faithful County expressed strong opposition to the plans at a special county board meeting on Thursday night. Dublin and Wexford have also rejected the proposals, and with several other counties in the province expected to take a similar line before Special Congress on October 4, it looks increasingly unlikely that it will get the straight majority that it needs.
Galway clubs will vote on Monday on whether or not to support the move - and county board chairman Gerry Larkin says there is unprecedented interest in the meeting.
He said: "We distributed the proposals to every club in the county and asked that they consider the matter themselves. We have not issued any suggestion as to what way clubs should vote. It is up to them to decide, not the county board, we are merely facilitating the grassroots in the county. We will go with whatever they decide."
Already the Athenry and Gort clubs have stated that they will be voting against the proposals, but it is known that many favour the move as they feel change is needed if Galway are to win their first All-Ireland hurling title since 1988.
