Lancashire Senior Final: John Michells v Oisin
September 25, 2008
On Sunday next John Mitchells of Liverpool will play Oisin CLG in a bid to retain the Lancashire crown and to progress to the All Britain Championship in order to retain that also. John Mitchells are clear favourites and have not lost a senior championship or league game in two years which demonstrates the dominance of the Liverpool side in this county. They are also junior Lancashire champions and are also looking to defend that in a few weeks time against either Oisin or Ellan Vannin Gaels who will meet in the junior semi final at a date to be arranged.
With a very strong panel to choose from and some very experienced players they will be looking to improve on last year and winning the Lancashire title again will set them up to go a step further this year.Last year they narrowly lost to Cork Junior Champions Cannove in the All Ireland junior quarter final by 6 points but feel they have learned from the experience.Cork native Sean Rice who was voted junior player of the year in Britain 2007 and who has played a major part in this years senior campaign for Mitchels maintains that the scars are still there from last years defeat and the team are ready for any challenge put in front of them.
He says "We have been training hard and we know have to be at our best against Oisin on sunday,as this game is in Liverpool our supporters are expecting bigger things from us but we wont be taking Oisin for granted" Sentiments also echoed by manager Danny McDonagh.
On the other hand Oisn have been preparing hard for this final and training has been varied with the club using big named stars to give them some tips with Republic Of Ireland international and current Leeds footballer Johnathan Douglas taking some training.Oisin reached the final the hard way with a three way play off against St Lawrences and an impressive victory against St Ann's.
Team manager Martin Cassidy is fully aware of the task ahead and knows how good John Mitchells are "We havent beaten them in a long time and for that matter no one has at this level but there is always a first time and hopefully our prearations over the past number of weeks has made us stronger and closer as a unit.Ihave been impressed with how the squad have improved since their first championship game this year and the addition of some new players have greatly helped".
Oisin have a major injury doubt for sunday with Karol Mcnamee injuring his knee and John Farmer junior also knee injury, the squad is a lot stronger and the addition of new players like Kevin Swift,Richie Fleming and Ritchie Coss have been impressive since joining the club. With a mix of experience with the likes of S Mcrory, Teague and Joe quinn there has been good combination play from the Didsbury outfit this year.
John Mitchells will be depending on their experienceand have alot in the likes of Darl McConnel,Kevin Kane and John Mcdermott it makes way for a very intriguing tie.
The game will throw in at 2.30Pm at Greenbank Rd Liverpool, preceded by an underage game and afterwards a womens game.It will be officiated by Shane Walsh from the St Brendans club in Manchester.
Oisin have organised a coach for players and supporters which is leaving Old Bedians at 11.30 and if you wish to travel contact the oisin club members for more information or log on to www.oisinclg.com.
