Doyle is championship's top scorer
September 23, 2008
Kildare's John Doyle was the most prolific forward in this year's championship, edging out Kerry's Colm Cooper for the coveted top scorer accolade.
Despite the Lilywhites' championship ending at the All-Ireland quarter-final stage, Doyle topped the scoring charts with 2-26 in five games, narrowly beating Cooper who racked up 2-25 after scoring 0-6 in Sunday's All-Ireland final.
Sean Cavanagh's five-point haul against the Kingdom saw the Tyrone full forward finish third with 2-24, while Limerick's Ian Ryan - who is a target of AFL clubs - was fourth with 3-20 in just four games.
Ryan's return ratio was the highest - he averaged 7.25 points per game compared to Doyle's 6.4.
The Allenwood clubman succeeds Cork's James Masters as top scorer. Masters chalked up 3-30 in the Rebels' run to last year's All-Ireland final.
