Inishowen GAA club notes

September 23, 2008
Buncrana Fundamental football for seven and eight year-olds resumes on Friday night in Crana College at 7pm. Fundamental football for five to six year-olds is at 11am on Saturday mornings, also in Crana College. Burt Next weekend the senior hurlers will play Setanta in the Donegal County Hurling Final. No venue or date has yet been announced, but it will likely be played on Sunday. Hopefully we can get a big crowd behind the team this year and support them as they look to regain their title they lost last year. Best of luck to everyone involved. Burt reached the final on Sunday past as they comfortably defeated Aodh Ruadh Ballyshannon in the County semi-final by 3-25 to 0-9. Burt led 0-15 to 0-3 at half-time but missed a lot of opportunities in front of goal. They improved on their first half performance after the interval with the defence and midfield notably on form. Training for the Senior Hurlers is on Tuesday and Thursday at 6.30pm. There was disappointment for the Junior Hurlers in their bid for a fourth county title in a row as they lost to Buncrana 5-8 to 1-9 in Saturday's game in O'Donnell Park. Burt had lost a number of players from last year's win but still considered their chances against a team competing in the Senior League. Buncrana's two early goals made it difficult for the team to regain ground but managed to reduce the deficit to four points at half-time. However some individual errors gave the game to Buncrana in the second half. In fairness, this was the only game the Juniors played this year. There was no semi-final nor indeed any competitive format provided for the team apart from the championship. Perhaps next year will be different. There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last week. Donal Campbell and Joe Boyle win ?20. The numbers drawn were 2, 5, 3, 4, 1, 7, 6. Next week's jackpot is ?1,050. Anyone with lottos should have them in the clubhouse by Thursday night or hand it to any club member. The u-16 hurlers lost out to Setanta in the League Championship last Thursday night at home. Burt now still have the County Championship to play for and have a game this Thursday evening. The u-12s will be beginning their County Championship campaign in the next few weeks. No date has yet been set for the league final versus Buncrana. Underage hurling training and camogie training is on Monday evenings from 6.30pm to 8pm. Please remember to bring helmet, equipment etc. The u-13 footballers played two and won two games last week. Last Tuesday night they travelled to Muff in the Inishowen Championship and won 4-15 to 4-2. On Saturday morning they made the trip to Downings in the Northern Board Championship and won 3-14 to 2-5. This week they have a bye in the Northern Board and have no game on Saturday. Our home game against Carndonagh this week has been postponed and parents will be notified when the game is re-scheduled. The u-10 hurlers took two teams to Buncrana on Sunday for a blitz and enjoyed a good day with a few comfortable wins. This Saturday the u-10 footballers travel to Muff to play the re-scheduled blitz from last month. Games begin at 10.30am and players/parents will be notified by the club for arrangements. Good luck to all the teams and players. Senior Football: Back at training after their league defeat against Robert Emmets last Sunday, the Carn management and team are focusing their efforts both on promotion to Division 2 of the all county league and on winning the Junior A Championship. League football is the bread and butter of the club, providing games throughout the summer season. The Championship on the other hand provides a source of extra excitement, especially when a club progresses to the final. To win a Championship is something special. Over the next 3 weeks club members will rally round to support the efforts of the players. A championship final is also an ideal opportunity for the whole parish to come along on the 12th October to support the team and show appreciation for the role the club plays in the life of our parish. Senior Camogie: Carn won their second Donegal camogie title in a row in a close fought battle with Marchievz (Killygordon) on Saturday night in Castlefin. Killgordon took an early lead but the Carn girls battled back well to score 2 points from Anita Doherty frees to take the lead. Treasa Doherty scored another point just before half time to leave the score at 3 points to 1. Oilbhe Coyne came very close to adding a goal but her shot hit the post and Carn couldn't score from the scramble that followed. That left 2 points between the teams at half time. Carn knew the 2nd half would be a battle and Killygordon came out and dominated the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half and 2 pointed frees brought the scores back to level at 3 points apiece. Killygordon were piling on the pressure at that stage and there was heroic defending from the 6 Carn backs and keeper, with Catherine Walker, Nuala Lafferty and Helen McGonagle especially impressive. They somehow managed to keep wave after wave of attack away from scoring a vital goal. Carn then went down the other end and Anita Doherty knocked over a free to give Carn a vital lead. Anita then repeated the trick almost immediately, scoring a great point from play to give Carn a two point advantage and then struck the killer blow when a shot from 50 yards out, dipped over the keepers head and into the net to give Carn a 5 point lead. In spite of some desperate attacking from Killygordon they couldn't score again and the Carn girls held on for the victory. All the Carn girls battled bravely to help achieve the victory but best on the evening were Catherine Walker and Nuala Lafferty at the back ably assisted by Deirdre Foley and Helen McGonagle. Anita Doherty was top class in midfield and scored 1-04 and all the forwards battled well with Toni McCormack and Orla Furlong particularly impressive. Final score Carndonagh 1-05 (Anita Doherty 1-04; Treasa Doherty 0-01) Marchievz 0-03 Underage: Congratulations to the u14 football team who beat Robert Emmets 3-10 to 0-10 in the Northern Board Championship final in Burt on Friday evening. The team will have a training session this Wednesday at 6-30pm and will play Naomh Columba in the county semi final. The u13 team beat Moville 2-9 to 2-8 on Tuesday in an entertaining game and the coach used 29 players, an indication of the numbers coming through at this level. Urris The U14's gave a magnificent display of grit and determination when winning the County Division 3 Championship last Wednesday evening in Muff. The game went into extra time and hung in the balance right up to the last few minutes, on the night our boys came away victorious but all praise must also go to the Lifford team who's never say die attitude made this such an enthralling encounter. Congratulations to the team from everyone associated with the Urris GAA Club, thank you to their managers Paul, Mickey and Sean for all the work they have done over what has been a very long season and finally thank you to all the supporters who came out to give them such magnificent support on the night.
